Raising a Moral Child

Connie's Corner

Of course there are so many components to raising children that have kind and generous hearts and actions. This articlediscusses how the words we choose when we praise children for their behavior that we want to encourage makes a difference.

Praising their character versus their actions helps them to internalize their behavior as part of their identity. According to research nouns work better than verbs. For example, “You are a helpful and kind person” or asking them to “be a helper” vs asking them “to help” helps children and probably all of us to lean more heavily toward the moral and generous choice. Words are powerful.
